The Sunderland & District Historical Society is a group of dedicated volunteers devoted to stimulatating public interest in the history of the people and places in and around the village of Sunderland.

Our work involves the Sunderland Museum's maintenance including the collection, classification, preservation and presentation of information and artifacts that reflect our local history.

We educate by improving community understanding and awareness of our local history by hosting events, supporting programs, and producing educational materials.

Our volunteers support those researching their ancestry by accessing the museum's considerable documentation on local families and settlements, local veterans, lot histories, cemeteries, school histories and so much more.

Community Champions of Our Past

The first iteration of our compilation of Community Champions of Our Past is now complete. This project was undertaken by the Sunderland & District Historical Society with the sponsorship of a Heritage Canada, New Horizon grant.

The compilation captures an overview of the achievement of notable area residents. All individuals featured in the presentation are deceased. All lived in the southern geographical area of Brock for at least ten years and distinguished themselves locally, nationally or globally through multiple contributions or achievements.

The project is designed to promote community pride. Our organization recognizes that the work may not be complete. There may be other individuals not yet documented whose accomplishments warrant such recognition. Undoubtedly, as this record is publicized, others of like accomplishment may come to mind. The Society welcomes public nomination of such individuals. Please do not hesitate to contact us with the name of anyone who might be included in the compilation of Community Champions. Even if your knowledge of the individual is incomplete, we can assist with the research.

Our society was once again active at the Sunderland Fall Fair, this its 170th year. Our members organized and sponsored the Antique class, this year drawing 68 entries. To assist with the expenses related to the work of our society, a gift basket was raffled and won by Christopher Hocher from Seagrave.
